Whimsical Wishes

Hello friends!  Today I have a card to share that works for three challenges - Time Out Challenges with a theme of friendship/encouragement/support, Just Us Girls where we are to CASE a DT (I'm CASEing Elizabeth's card) and Addicted to Stamps and More with an any occasion theme.

Several months ago I bought the Spellbinders Whimsical Wishes bundle because I fell in love with the wonky looking houses and flowers, which in a way reminded me of Whoville in Horton Hears a Who (I don't think I'm alone in that lol!).  Thanks to Elizabeth for inspiring me to finally put it to use!

While there are four styles of houses and four different flowers in the die sets, I stuck with just one house and a couple flowers so everything would fit on a A2 sized card.

I first die cut and assembled all the images, then decided on how everything was to be laid out on the card.  I used the Village Companions set to die cut the clouds and cute doggo, and an edger die from Taylored Expressions to create the green hillside.  The light purple "sky" background was created using the Whimsical Skies embossing folder.

Once everything was in place on the card front, I used a TE stamp and die set to create the greeting, which was added with thin foam tape.  I love the wonky house and those ginormous flowers; the sets truly live up to their name and hopefully give the recipient a reason to smile.

Thanks for taking time to stop by, I appreciate it!

Autumn Magic for PP809

Hello friends!  Can you believe how quickly this month is flying by?  I'm trying to enjoy every remaining day of beautiful October.  The trees are turning color en mass, the leaves are falling and the chill is in the air.  Love it!

Anyway, that's not why you're here!  We have a new challenge over at the Paper Players starting today and the amazing Christy has a fabulous sketch to spark your creativity.

Speaking of flying by, I created an autumn themed card featuring a very cute owl.  Check it out...

Isn't she fun?  The die set includes everything except the sentiment and the branch, which I hand cut from brown cardstock.  The packaging definitely inspired the arched nighttime scene, but I changed it to align with Christy's sketch, the branch being the horizontal strip and the owl being the shape rather than a large leaf.

All the die cut pieces were ink blended with various Distress inks, the exception being her face.  There were dies to cut out pink cheeks for the owl, but I chose to just use a light colored pink Copic marker in the embossed areas rather than the harsh look of the dies.  In hindsight, I wish I'd done a bit of shading on her face.  In real life, she looks fine but the photos make her look much paler.

After I created the arch background from dark blue cardstock, I used a darker blue ink and blended it across the upper part of the sky.  When that dried, I used gold splatter to emulate stars.  When that dried, the moon and die cut stars were added around the owl sitting on her branch, and I filled the space beneath with a variety of fall leaves.  The sentiment was gold heat embossed and popped up on foam tape and that finished things off.

I realized, just as I was finishing this post, that I forgot the extra layer on top of the base.  I think the card still bears the essence of the sketch, hopefully!

This is such a great sketch with unlimited options, so I hope you'll find time to join us.  The challenge will remain open until Friday, October 30th at 3pm.  In the meantime, I encourage you to visit the challenge blog where my talented teammates have oodles of inspiration for you.

Thanks for stopping by!

Happy Autumn for PP808

Hello friends!  It's time for a new challenge over at the Paper Players and this week I'm hosting.  This is Clean and Simple week and in addition to that, we're looking for cards with a fall/autumn theme.

I'm also joining my friends at TOC #324.  I think a couple of the elements on my card (pumpkin, coffee cut) fit well with their photo inspiration challenge.

And I'm also playing along with the current Tic Tac Toe challenge, using Fall Colors, Leaves and Metallics.

Autumn is my favorite time of year and I know I'm not alone in that.  I had so many ideas about cards to make but then I received my Simon Says Stamp October card kit and that was the deciding factor as to what to create.

In the kit were four Seasonal Whimsy card fronts that incorporate both a pattern and a squiggly-edged white space on one layer.  That way the card looks layered but it's not.  Since I knew I would be using an orange and teal color combo, I chose this striped pattern.

The images are from the Homespun Gratitude stamp and die set.  They were stamped in brown ink, then colored using Copic markers.  The set has multiple small images so they can be mixed and matched any way one chooses.  I thought the cup with the scarf wrapped around it was like the epitome of "cozy" (even though I probably would be too afraid of spilling my cup to wrap it up like that!).  They were die cut and added to the card front with foam tape.

The sentiment is an older one from SSS and was cut with teal and added to the vellum die cut shadow before adhering to the card.  My camera did not like taking a clear shot of the sentiment, so I apologize for its fuzzy appearance.  The final touch was to add a few gold confetti sequins.  I know my card is a bit busy for "CAS", but I figured with limited layers I could squeak by. ;-)

Thanks for stopping by, I appreciate it!  Please take a moment and visit the challenge blog where the rest of our amazing design team has some fabulous CAS fall cards to inspire you.  The challenge will remain open until Friday October 23rd at 3pm EDT.  I hope you'll join us this week!

Boo to You

Hello friends!  I'm popping in to share a card made for the challenges at Just Us Girls and Festive Friday.  I had a die set on my desk for creating one last (I think) Halloween card for my family and realized it would work great for both of these challenges.

The little ghost cup with it's cute smiling face reminded me of the three I was readying for my card, except they have a few more apparel items, shall we say!

My card has 4 items off the Inspo List - orange, black, green and a Halloween sentiment.

And here's what I ended up making...

These adorable ghosts are from a die set that I bought on sale earlier this year because I found their cuteness so charming.  I used a quad layout for my card similar to an example on the Spellbinders website except I changed up a number of things.

I went with classic Halloween colors of green, orange, purple and black, both for the attire that the ghosts are wearing and the background.  After putting together the three ghosts and the sentiment, I went to work on the background.

I used four different colored panels cut to 2.5" x 3.5" and adhered them together on a 5" x 7" piece of super lightweight cardstock.  Not quite as thin as copy paper, which would work fine too, but thin enough that I could then emboss the layered panel after finding the right sandwich.  One of the small panels had pulled away from abutting the other during the embossing, so I cut four black strips to cover that up, which also acted to separate each of the four sections.

The ghosts were then added with thin foam tape as was the pumpkin candy holder and the sentiment.  Lastly, I used some black star embellishments that came in my Heroween kit to add a bit of sparkle.  I think these ghosts are so adorable and I'm also thinking their hats and glasses might work with other dies sets...we'll have to see!

Thanks for stopping by, I appreciate it.  Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Boo Mobile for CH143

Hello friends!  Today is the start of a new challenge at Color Hues.  This time, the fabulous Tracey is hosting and has chosen a great color combination for this time of year.

With this color pairing and given the time of year, I felt only a Halloween card was in order.

If you're a fan of Spellbinders, you're well aware of this die set and embossing folder that came out in the clubs for August of this year.  I love everything Halloween, so of course they both had to come home with me.

After all the die cutting from regular and glitter cardstock, assembling it was pretty easy. I did ink blending over both the Boo Mobile and the pumpkin ornament prior to assembly to give them more shape and dimension.

I thought the design on the packaging was great, but it included a flying eyeball that I wasn't especially fond of.  Then I saw this version from Nichol Spohr using the skull and crossbones at the top of the car and I liked that much better.

For the background, a panel of gray was ink blended around the edges with Black Soot Distress ink and embossed with the spider web folder. When the black ink was dry, I used an older white pigment ink pad to swipe white over the tops of the webs.  And yes, it did leave a tiny bit of color, but I have this ink pad especially for these kinds of projects and have two others that are pristine.  Sparkle and white splatter were added as well.

The sentiment was heat embossed in white on black, die cut and added to the bottom of the dried panel before adding the car full of our crazy, creepy crew (don't you love those witches' legs?).

So how are you inspired to use these colors?  We'd love to have you join us and see what you come up with.  I encourage you to visit the challenge blog to see the variety of fabulous creations by the rest of the design team.  The challenge will remain open until Thursday October 29th at 9 am EDT.  Hope to see you there!

Breezy Day for PP807

Hello friends!  Another Sunday has rolled around and it's time for a new challenge with the Paper Players.  This week the fabulous Jan is hosting our monthly color challenge and has chosen a lovely trio of colors.

This color combo made me think of the outdoors, although I think it would also look wonderful in a plaid design too.  However, I decided to use a new die set to make kind of a fun, whimsical outdoors card. I was thinking birthday, but really the sentiment could be for other occasions as well. And because it's a new set, I'm sharing over at Darnell's NBUS blog.

And here's my card...

I went super simple for this card.  While I don't have the SU inks, I used colors I thought were as close as possible - Altenew Blue Horizon and Simon Says Stamp Limelicious and Pearfection (for shading).  I started by stenciling a sky using a cloud stencil and trimming the panel down to just slightly smaller than my card base.

The kites were die cut from white and Spellbinders Fawn cardstock.  I used the green inks to color the kites, attached them to the Fawn base and added the cross bars, also out of Fawn.  Originally, I'd added white bows on the tails, but they got lost against the sky.  So, I opted to die cut them from matte gold cardstock, which also matched up nicely with the foiled sentiment.  The kites were added to the card front with foam tape and the sentiment was die cut twice more and adhered together for a bit of added dimension.  Super easy, peasy and probably one of the more CAS cards I've made in a while.

Thanks so much for stopping by!  I encourage you to head over to the challenge blog and see all the amazing creations by my talented teammates.  The challenge will remain open until Friday October 16th at 3pm EDT.  I hope to see your card in the gallery!

Mountain Peak for PP806

Hello friends!  It's the first Sunday of October and that means a new theme challenge at the Paper Players!  This time the talented and lovely Ann is hosting and has chosen a wonderful theme.

Think of all the possibilities with this theme!  Winter snow, October skies and leaves, the bright colors of a field of wildflowers in spring... For my card, I went with my beloved mountains.  Growing up in western Oregon, I had the delight of seeing Mt. Hood in all her glory nearly every day (when it wasn't raining ha ha) and then spending decades skiing up there.  So, when I saw the Mountain Peak stencil set from Altenew, there was no question it belonged in my craft room.

The set includes 4 layers plus a mask of the mountain, which allows you to extend the scene to include more than one peak, which is what I did here.  Instead of using grays, I went with a set of periwinkle-ish inks to create the look of a partial mountain range.  For the sky I used a light hand to apply a slightly different light purple, blush and light blue inks.

Since this card was going to my husband for our anniversary, I decided to dress it up with the arched window die cut from Altnew Glacier Iris cardstock, popped up with foam over the stenciled mountains scene and added a gold frame.  I had a number of previously foiled sentiments on hand that fortunately included the "Happy Anniversary" which fit perfectly in the arched opening and finished off my card.

Won't you come join us this week for this great themed challenge?  I encourage you to visit our challenge blog to see all the wonderful inspiration from my talented teammates.  The challenge will remain open until Friday, October 9th at 3pm EDT.  Hope to see your card in the gallery!

Artsy Leaves for CH142

Hello friends!  Happy October 1st!  I'm doubly happy because October is my favorite month of the year and I am hosting the new challenge at Color Hues.  I've chosen a definite fall-ish color pair of Amber and Burnt Red, and I hope you have fun playing with these colors.

In addition to challenge colors, you may also use neutrals (e.g. white, ivory, brown, gray, black and metallics).  And unfortunately, green is not a neutral. *wink*

Don't get too hung up on perfectly matching the colors in the prompt. Use what you have to get as close as possible.

For my card I had a great time mixing and blending Distress Spray Stains for my leaf dies.  Take a look...

Aren't those leaves fun?  I started with a couple panels of Distress Watercolor paper and used a mixed of reds and some yellow on one and then two yellows and a yellow mica stain on the other.  I know the photo makes the red look almost rust...I had a heck of a time getting one decent photo.  But in real life, the red really comes through.

The leaves were cut out using Artsy Leaves dies from Tim Holtz.  The veins were cut with Spellbinders Tuscan and Concord & 9th Brickyard. The Alabaster background was embossed with the Whimsical Skies folder, which I thought was perfect for fall.  The gold frame was layered on two additional die cuts then added to the embossed background before adhering the leaves.

The panel was matted on a slightly larger piece of Vineyard Berry from Altenew, which has more of a brick look than a berry appearance. The final step was to add the gold die cut sentiment, also layered on two additional die cuts.

I hope you'll find time to join us this next fortnight!  I encourage you to head over to the challenge blog to see all the fabulous inspiration by the other DT members and our fabulous guest designer Crystal.  The challenge will remain open until Wednesday, October 14th at 9 am EDT.  Please come play along with us!

Indian Summer Birthday for PP805

Hello friends!  This week at the Paper Players, the lovely Jaydee is hosting our monthly sketch challenge and she has a great one for us to create with.

This sketch gave me the opportunity to use a piece of loved, older (aka hoarded) patterned paper and combine some different colors for a fall look.

I'm also joining the current Seize the Birthday challenge, where the toppings option is to use fall colors.

And here's my card...

After searching through my patterned papers, I came upon on old Basic Grey pad called Indian Summer.  I chose this piece because I like the drama of the dark background and the inclusion of berry and pink colors along with yellow and orange.  I found a half panel of Stampin' Up retired Merlot cardstock and matched it up with some Spellbinders Scilly cardstock, which to me kind of looks like a coral-orange color, both of which I thought they worked well together and with the BG paper.

Both the Merlot and patterned paper were cut down with the Spellbinders Playful Stitched Panels die and adhered to the Scilly background panel just in the middle of both sheets. This allowed me to gently bend up all the corners.  The leaf and branch die cuts were from some unused leftovers, and I used an old SU stitched circle die onto which they were adhered.  The foiled sentiment was added atop all of those layers, then the final touch was to add three gold confetti embellishments.

Thanks for visiting, I appreciate it.  Please take a moment to head over to our challenge blog and check out the fabulous inspiration from the other DT members.  The challenge will remain open until Friday, October 2nd at 3pm EDT.  I hope you'll join us this week!

Polar Bear Pal for PP804

Hello friends!  Sunday has rolled around again, bringing a new challenge at the Paper Players.  This week, the amazing Christy is hosting our CAS challenge, and she wants us to include a bear or bears on our cards.  Just remember to keep it clean, with minimal layers and embellishments.

I went looking through my stamp and die sets and found a few potentials for a bear card.  I finally landed on a cute one from MFT.  While they're out of business, I have a good amount of product from them that I will never part with, and the stamp set I used for today's card is one of them.

He's so cute, isn't he?  I went with a teal and purple color scheme, a combo on the cool end of the color spectrum, which seemed apropos for a polar bear.  I stamped and colored him with Copic and Olo markers. I left the stamp in the stamp positioner, so I could restamp him in black pigment ink, remove that stamp and line up the sentiment beneath him.

I wanted to use something more playful than a normal rectangle and my old MFT Modern Rectangle stax came to the rescue.  The larger panel was cut from Simon's Peacock cardstock, which tends to be more on the green than blue side of teal and matched the teal markers I used on his scarf.  Unfortunately, photos using my phone camera tend to give everything more of a blue hue.  The teal panel was die cut then I use a large background stamp to add tone on tone little twinkles and dots for just a bit of interest.  After it was added to the card base, the main image was mounted with foam tape. No embellishments this time.

Thanks for stopping by, I appreciate it.  I encourage you to head over to the challenge blog to see the fabulous cards from the rest of the design team.  The challenge will remain open until Friday September 25th at 3pm EDT.  I hope you'll join us this week!

Potentially Cursed for Color Hues

Hello friends!  It's time for a new challenge at Color Hues and this time the lovely Sheri chose this wonderful combination of colors.

I was quite tempted to create a floral with this duo of colors, but my love of Halloween took me in a "hauntingly" different direction, bwwwhhhaaa!

I had so much fun making this card.  Spellbinders recently came out with the new Color Block Rectangle dies, which I had to have after loving the arched version that came out earlier this year.  Anyway, while I was shopping, I found this cute Halloween cat and she had to come home to me along with the rectangle dies.

I knew the basic layout I wanted but messed around with the background and finally decided to use a panel of C&9 Avacado cardstock and darken it by ink blending SSS Artichoke ink and Black Soot Distress ink over the entire thing, keeping it lighter in the middle.

The cat was easy to assemble, although the eyes were a bit tricky.  If you don't get them placed correctly, the eyes can appear crossed or wandering in opposite directions lol! Before adding our witchy cat to the panel, I stamped it with a spider web from another set.  Once I had her in place, the two die cut bats were added, along with the sentiment, which makes me giggle every time I see it!  To me the sentiment looks a bit crooked, but I checked it three times with my T-square ruler and the word are straight.  I may still fiddle around with it.

After assembling the card, I decided to add one last thing.  Using my white gel pen, I gave her some magic sparkles around her head.

What are you inspired to create with these colors?  For more ideas, please head over to the challenge blog where my amazing teammates and our wonderful guest designer Amanda have some fabulous cards to inspire you.  The challenge will remain open until Tuesday, September 29th at 9 am EDT.  I hope you'll join us!

Rustic Thanks for PP803

Hello friends!  Here we are, the second Sunday of the month and that means we have a new color challenge for you at the Paper Players!  This time the lovely LeAnne is hosting and has chosen a trio of pretty colors that I find perfect for fall.

Because these colors remind me of fall, I created a pretty bouquet with the challenge colors along with neutrals in ivory, a metallic champagne plus light and dark browns.

The bouquet definitely has a lot of layers and dimension.  I probably got a little carried away (a little???) but I love how it turned out.

I started by cutting the five layers of each flower from Stampin' Up Pumpkin Pie and Crushed Curry.  The foliage was die cut from ivory, dark and light brown along with PP and CC. The two ivory leafy branches were then ink blended with bright yellow and Real Red inks. The layers of the flowers were ink blended with darker shades of orange and yellow then white pigment ink was dabbed onto the ends.

The background panel was stamped with the Cracked Background stamp from Simon Says Stamp using a light brown ink.  A strip of wood embossed brown cardstock was layered at the bottom for the "table", then the doily and watering can with the Thanks sentiment were added.  The flowers were layered on with varying levels of foam tape then all the foliage was tucked in behind them.  I decided there was enough going on so embellishments weren't necessary.

So what are you inspired to make with this trio of colors?  To see the fabulous designs by the other DT members, use the link here to visit the challenge blog.  The challenge will remain open until 3pm EDT on Friday, September 18th.  I hope to see your card in the gallery!

You Are Spell-tacular!

Hello friends!  I had some crafty fun this weekend and made a card for the current challenge at Time Out Challenges, which is The Movies.

When I first saw the theme, I didn't think I had anything that would work, but then the proverbial light bulb came on, and I remembered a set from Stamping Bella that I bought last year that I thought would work great for this challenge.

These are the Tiny Townie Witch and Wizards in Training stamps.  I became a huge fan of Harry Potter thanks to my grandchildren, and I've read all the books and seen all the movies (multiple times), so I was quite pleased to see Stamping Bella come out with this trio of stamps.

There are no dies for these images, so after the Copic coloring was complete, they were fussy cut.  There is a backdrop stamp by SB that accompanies these three, which I have, but I was running short of the time it would take to color the whole scene, so I opted to put them in front of the Forbidden Forest lol!

I created the background panel by ink blending a dark sky and full moon, then adding a bit of white splatter for "stars".  I then die cut the "forest" using the Simon Says Stamp Arched Forest Die and embossing folder with dark brown card stock.  After embossing, I went over it with both Black Soot and Scorched Timber Distress inks to darken the appearance.

With those two layers adhered together I added our wizards and witch with layers of thin and thick foam squares.  The sentiment is from the Wicked Words SB set and was white heat embossed and die cut with a small rectangle die.

I hope you like my fun card about one of all-time favorite movies series. I had a blast making this and it even prompted me to open up the first book and start reading it again.

Thanks for taking time to visit!

Birthday Wishes for PP802

Hello friends! I'm back with a card for our new challenge at the Paper Players.  This week we have a great theme from the amazing Joanne.

This is a really flexible theme.  As you can see by the prompt, candles for any occasion (or decor) will work.  I chose to make a birthday card this time because I can always use more plus I have a stamp and die set that hadn't been brought out to play yet, so this was the perfect opportunity.  And because I made a birthday card with it and this is its first outing, I'll be linking up to the Anything Goes challenge at Seize the Birthday and to Darnell's NBUS challenge.  I'm also sharing with the current Simon Says Stamp Wednesday Challenge where they're looking for stamped images (no digi).

I went with some bright colors for this birthday card.

Aren't those fun and festive images?  The set is one stamp that adds all the images, then there are two dies - one that cuts the 3 small designs in a row and the two larger together, all with the postage collage look.  I decided to cut them all apart so I could create this look with each one at a tilt except the small one in the middle at top.

Before cutting apart, everything was colored with Copic and Olo markers.  The frames were open too, so one could use any color, but because I had a variety of bright colors, I thought black worked best.  And I think it really makes them pop.

Once cut apart, they were added with thin foam squares to a teal panel cut with a postage edge rectangle.  I found the sentiment already stamped and die cut so I place that at the bottom of the panel, then arranged all the cute images above.  The last thing was to add Glossy Accents to the balloons and use a shimmer pen to add sparkle to the ribbon on the package, the confetti, hat and cupcake.

Thanks for taking time to visit!  The team has some wonderful cards with candles over on the challenge blog, so head on over there for more inspiration.  The challenge will remain open until 3pm Friday September 11th.  I hope you'll join us!
