Swallowtail Birthday

Hello again! I've made one more card for this week's Color Challenge at Splitcoaststampers, with the colors Crushed Curry, Pumpkin Pie and Watermelon Wonder (SCS CC584).  For "dessert", we could use our favorite color of green.  For this card I wanted to use the Swallowtail Butterfly stamp with those lovely colors.

I began by stamping the butterfly on a panel of water color paper, then used an Aqua Painter and reinkers in the challenge colors to color the butterfly.  After the butterfly dried (I used my heat tool to speed up that process), I colored the background in one of the new In Colors, Emerald Envy.  Now, this is a very bright and cool green, but with plenty of water from the Aqua Painter, it became a soothing, lovely light green.

You may have noticed that this butterfly was actually adhered to the background - if you did you'd be right.  On my first try, after the background dried I went in and added some spots and other textured background stamps in Crushed Curry, such as you see in the photos above.  But then I added some spots in black and it looked AWFUL!  Yikes!  So I ended up fussy cutting the butterfly, coloring another background on a water color paper panel, adding stamped texture ONLY in Crushed Curry, then layering on the butterfly image.  Much better

Lots of extra and unexpected work to get to this final version but I am very happy I stuck with it.  I really love the "cool: temperature" of the blue green background with all the warm colors used to color the butterfly and the yellow sentiment banner.

Thanks so much for visiting.  Be sure to use the link above to visit the SCS Color Challenge - great inspiration and no time limit to join in.

Until next time....

Stef
